Shoe Confussion

So, I found a great deal on running shoes. I went to try them on, hoping they would feel good, buy them, and shop around some more. Instead, I ended up trying on 4 or 5 pairs and leaving totally confused!

If you know anything about running or do any running, you are supposed to know if you are a pronator, or a supinator, or neutral. I believe that I supinate, but what shoe does that mean I need, and how is it supposed to feel? I tried on many, like you are supposed to do, and they all feel fine and different in different ways. So now I don't know what to do, cause I'm not sure what to look for. What's best for my foot? Hmmmm.....

I never thought that running shoe technology would get the best of me, yet it has.....

  1. Hi Christy,

My name is Paul and I work at a running shoe store. Where did you go to try on running shoes? The particular store that I work at is called Gazelle Sports and I don't mean to just plug my store, but we are a specialty running store that exists for people like you that need to know what shoe is best for them. You say that you supinate, which means that you would run on the outside of your feet. Someone that supinates has minimal movement in their ankle and usually has a high arch. The type of shoe that is good for a supinator is a high cushion shoe. There aren't many shoes specifically designed for supinators, so we would normally fit a supinator in a neutral shoe with a lot of cushion. The cushion is designed to let the foot sink into and by being soft it is designed to help release some of the pressure in a tight arch. If you went to Gazelle Sports, anyone that would help you would watch you walk and see what type of shoe is best for you. Does that help? I hope you are able to find a good running shoe!

  2. Christy,

I think you should try the Ryka Running shoe it is designed for a woman's foot by woman. most shoes are made on a man's shoe form and sized down to fit woman. This is not true of the Ryka once I learned of these shoes from my orthopedic Dr. I tried them and have never gone back once you wear a shoe designed to actually fit your foot you can't go back to wearing a sized down mans shoe. You can get these shoes at a lady footlocker and I have even seen them now at dsw. If you do not like them I would try the Asics these are what my girls were and both Karen and Grace ran track and grace even cross country and they love them. I have recommended the Ryka's to others in the past and now it is all they will wear also. Aunt Judy

  3. Thanks Paul and Judy for your imput on shoes. I actually went to Gazelle and got fitted in some Brooks. I loved how they felt, but after 3 5K ish runs, I'm returning them tonight. Though my feet feel fine, my body is aching! I think I pound the pavement harder then I thought! I'm achy and sore in places I haven't been before. I think I need more cushioning and hopefully I'll find a pair that works tonight. This finding the right shoe while you are running is harder then I thought!
